  • Can You Bring Wine to a Cooking Class?

Of course, you can! Bringing wine to a cooking class is a great way to elevate your culinary experience, as it provides a fun and interactive environment that will enrich your understanding of food and wine pairing. As we see sparkling lights and hear cheerful melodies everywhere we go, the holiday season asks for a time of joy, celebration, and feasting. How about adding a layer of fun and sophistication to your celebrations and bringing your wine to a cooking class? Enhancing Flavors Wine is renowned for complementing and elevating food flavors. By bringing your wine to a cooking class, you will not only sharpen your understanding of cooking and tasting but also learn about the chemistry between food and wine pairing, allowing you to apply your knowledge beyond the kitchen on any night out or get-together with friends and family. Getting Cozy The cold weather asks for a cozier drink. Wine is the perfect choice for fostering a more relaxed and warm atmosphere. Bringing your wine to a cooking class can make the class more enjoyable and interactive by encouraging participants to break the ice with one another, as well as making the class less of an intimidating lecture and more of a fun experience. Perfect Matches When thinking about what wine to bring to your cooking class, choose a wine that matches the intensity of your dish. Red wines, for example, are great choices for pasta and pizza-making classes, as their acidity complements the richness of hearty, meaty sauces or lighter herby ones. White wines, on the other hand, are perfect for lighter dishes such as fish, or cream-based vegetables. By bringing your wine to a cooking class you will have the opportunity to deepen your culinary skills, understand the art of pairing, and enjoy an environment of fun and good banter. And remember, as you will be handling kitchen tools and engaging with other people, it is of great importance to drink responsibly, so moderation is key. So what are you waiting for? Celebrate the holidays in great style and sophistication by bringing your wine to a cooking class! Happy cooking and happy sipping!

  • Creating Memories: Family Cooking Classes

It’s finally December, it’s no secret that family traditions have a huge presence during this time, but how about creating new memories? Join a family cooking class! It’s finally December! You know what that means: lots of cheery music, bundling up for the cold, and end-of-year festivities. The holidays are a time to reflect on the past year, eat great food, and spend time with your loved ones. It’s no secret that family traditions have a huge presence during this time, and it sounds like a great time to implement a new one. Introducing a great way to spend time with family that doesn’t have to involve more dish-washing and house cleaning: family cooking classes! Just In Time For The Holidays Whether you want to learn how to cook up a conventional holiday dish or try something entirely new altogether, the holidays are a great time to experiment with and learn how to make some delicious meals. If you have ever considered taking a cooking class, now is the time! There will be lots of dinners to host or attend, dishes with friends and family, and let’s face it: who doesn’t love some yummy leftovers the day after? On top of all this, the holiday mood creates a great, comfortable, and warm environment that is great for some relaxing cooking. Whether that’s with some holiday jazz or with the fireplace crackling, this time of year allows you to personalize your experience and make it your own. In addition, you are able to choose the type of cooking class you want–whether it’s learning how to make a new entree, a main dish, or even a sweet treat at the end of the night! Setting Quality Time Aside Let’s face it: sometimes, this time of year can be hectic and stressful like no other. And even though the theme is always to hold your loved ones close–the endless planning, shopping, and cooking can make it difficult to really spend quality time with your family. This is why family cooking classes are a fantastic way to appreciate your loved ones and reflect on the highs and lows of the past year, all while making memories (and dinner). By booking a family cooking class, everybody will consciously and intentionally set aside that time to do what the holidays are really for: a celebration of togetherness. This, coupled with a delicious dish of your choosing? Sounds like a recipe for fun. A Recipe For Bonding Oftentimes, we make memories that are most precious to us when we are surrounded by people we love. Family cooking classes offer the perfect space for this, in a way that is unlike your typical icebreakers or conversations. Cooking classes challenge you with cooperation, competition, and communication–and all these skills are ones that you can practice in and out of the kitchen. Whether your family is a well-oiled machine at this cooking class or still developing some tactics to succeed, you’re sure to have a laugh and bond with your loved ones during this experience. And whether you’re cooking with your immediate family, chosen family, or extended family that you haven’t seen in a while, cooking classes present the opportunity to truly learn more about each and every individual, and allows them their own independence to try something as well. You don’t have to be a masterchef–anybody can learn in this environment, and perhaps being there with family will be all the more encouraging. Cheffin' It Up! When talking about family cooking classes, it is of course imperative to acknowledge the amazing professional(s) that help you learn how to make a great dish: the chef(s)! Although cooking classes are an opportunity to bond with your family, perhaps you’re worried about sending everybody into the kitchen, spatulas and knives in hand. There is no need to worry, though: the amazing professionals that guide you through cooking classes and incorporate their own twist into holiday specials will be there to instruct, mediate, and include everybody in this experience. Not only will they make the dish that much more delicious, but they will also be there to facilitate this learning experience and spread the cheer around–what gets more holiday than that? New Family Recipe One of the greatest things you can get from this experience is walking away with a professional-endorsed, mouth-watering plate: and even though it might be gone in seconds, you can cherish the recipe forever. And what makes this even more special? With family cooking classes, your entire family was there! Each and every one of you take something away from this experience, and get to bring it back to even more people. Just as you can make this adventure your own and walk away with a new family recipe, perhaps family cooking classes can become an annual tradition too! Wow Your Guests Oh, and how could we forget: whipping up an incredible dish for your friends and family in the very near future. You don’t learn new techniques for nothing, and the holidays offer the perfect time to put what you’ve learned to work. In addition, you could even prepare this meal with your family again! Then, when somebody asks who made a dish so innovative and delicious–you can proudly say it was a team effort. Here’s to family! Cheers to that.

  • Corporate Cooking: A Unique Approach to Event Cooking Classes

In a unique fusion of work and play, corporate cooking classes offer a space for people to strengthen relationships, build skills, and have fun. Read more to find out about the endless benefits of this surprisingly effective activity. Do What You Love, Love What You Do Have you ever heard of the phrase “do what you love, love what you do?” That gets difficult the minute you are put under high pressure circumstances and put together with coworkers who you don’t know very well. Corporate cooking classes offer a relaxed environment where you can accept this mantra wholeheartedly: in a meaningful mix of working toward a common goal and casual conversation, you are sure to walk into work with an extra pep in your step the next day. This less formal setting may feel jarring at first, but it’s a great way to increase your confidence in the company and therefore increase your work value. Even if you aren’t a master chef, cooking is something that can reveal a lot about yourself and your coworkers! Maybe you’ll be surprised. Team-Building Corporate cooking classes are the definition of team building: after all, these are a group of people who have had to work together for some time. However, maybe the goals feel far-off or discouraging at times. This is where cooking classes come in–with a clear, short-term goal, one that can be achieved by everyone doing their part. While it may seem like a simple model for some projects that immensely outweigh this one, by learning how everyone works, it becomes exponentially easier to coordinate, collaborate, and trust each other when it really matters. Who knew making a dish together could lead to such broad success? Getting to Know...Everyone! Now, what about the coworkers that you don’t regularly cross paths with on a regular basis? This is a completely normal phenomenon, especially as there are so many people who are working on different projects. However, getting to meet and chat with a variety of different people can result in a friendlier, more welcoming work environment, as well as one where you know that everyone is ultimately working towards a common goal. To do this all over a food at a corporate cooking class? A great plus. It’s a great way to increase your confidence in the company and therefore increase your work value. Close-Knit Community Lastly, in terms of speaking about coworker relationships, corporate cooking classes just result in a closer-knit team of individuals. And the data proves just how important this is: time and time again, studies have shown that good coworker relationships are the fuel for success in various different companies. Maybe it’s the sense of community when it comes to working towards a common goal, or just a heightened sense of excitement to come into work, but either way, corporate cooking classes can help you achieve this success in the workplace and in the kitchen. Skill-Building Unsurprisingly, corporate cooking classes teach a variety of skills that maybe aren’t seen on the resume: communication, creativity, problem-solving, and self-confidence. While this event may be disguised as a simple event to get to know each other, you can actually learn a lot about how to work in a group setting, which directly translates over to your work itself. Whether it’s figuring out what to do when you’re a little short on flour or if you facing some unexpected mishaps, not only do you learn how to deal with these unforeseen situations, but you can also observe the reactions of your coworkers. Ultimately, understanding each other when it comes to high-stress or uncomfortable situations can avoid misunderstanding and conflict in the future, as well as give you a whole new skillset: building not only your analytical brain but also building your confidence in different circumstances. Diversity in the Workplace When food is introduced as a communal experience, as it is in corporate cooking classes, it opens up conversations about culture, society, and taste. In conversations that would never be brought up otherwise, cooking can be a facilitator for diversity, as everyone comes from a different background. Incorporating diversity into the workplace is not only a great practice in group acceptance and uplifting values, but it is also a way to spark meaningful relationships and really take something away from each and every person in the group. Every individual has something special to show for themselves: it’s up to you to open that door. Understanding each other when it comes to high-stress or uncomfortable situations can avoid misunderstanding and conflict in the future. Corporate Cooking Classes with IMPASTIAMO At IMPASTIAMO, we specifically hold events for corporate cooking classes, and we have the resources to show for it. To see more about our work and what we do, go to our website! We can’t wait to see you soon.

  • The Roman Empire Trend Made Us Think: What Did The Romans Eat?

Feasting like an Emperor: What Romans Ate During the Roman Empire Sooooo, how often do you think about the Roman Empire? You've probably seen this latest viral trend everywhere - and we did too! But at IMPASTIAMO, our primary focus is food (in any form and any variation), so we couldn't betray our original and purest intentions. Instead, we decided to dig into the past and find out what people ate during the Roman Empire (did they think about food constantly, like us?). When we think about dining in the Roman Empire, our minds often conjure images of toga-clad aristocrats reclining on lavish couches, indulging in extravagant banquets. And while that may be partially true, Roman cuisine was a diverse blend of flavors and ingredients that catered to the tastes of both the wealthy and the common folk. Join us on a culinary journey through the heart of ancient Rome as we explore the tantalizing dishes and drinks that graced their tables. A Breadbasket of the Empire Bread was the cornerstone of the Roman diet. The common man's daily sustenance came in the form of a rustic loaf, often dipped in wine for added flavor. The affluent, on the other hand, enjoyed a variety of bread made from finer grains, sometimes even flavored with spices. A favorite treat was "libum," a sweet cheesecake-like bread often offered to the gods as a sacrifice. Olives: The Roman Superfood Olives were a dietary staple for the Romans, consumed in various forms. They enjoyed them fresh, pickled, or pressed into oil. Olive oil was a versatile ingredient used in almost every aspect of cooking, from sautéing to salad dressings. Its rich, fruity flavor added depth to many dishes and was cherished for its supposed health benefits. Grapes Galore Romans loved their grapes, not just for their fruit but for the wine they produced. The empire boasted a vast variety of wines, each with its own distinct character. Red wines like Falernian were robust and potent, while white wines like Apianum were lighter and sweeter. Wine wasn't just for sipping; it was often diluted with water and enjoyed throughout the day, even by children. The Meat of the Matter Meat was a symbol of wealth and status in Roman society. The wealthy indulged in an array of meats, including poultry, pork, and lamb. They adored exotic meats like peacock and flamingo, which showcased their extravagant tastes. Commoners typically ate less meat, but it still played a significant role in their diet, especially during festivals. Seafood from Every Corner With a vast empire spanning three continents, Romans had access to an incredible variety of seafood. Coastal regions offered everything from oysters to octopus, and salted fish was a common pantry staple. Garum, a fermented fish sauce, was akin to modern-day ketchup, used liberally to season and enhance the flavor of dishes. From Earth to Table: Vegetables and Herbs Vegetables and herbs found their way into Roman kitchens, where they were celebrated for their medicinal and culinary properties. Popular vegetables included cabbage, leeks, and asparagus. Fresh herbs like basil, oregano, and coriander added layers of flavor to dishes. Sweet Temptations The Romans had a sweet tooth, and their desserts were a delightful affair. Honey was a prized sweetener, drizzled generously over fruits and pastries. One of their favorite sweets was "mustaceum," a cake made with grape must, which lent a rich, fruity flavor. The Fluid Elixir: Water and More Water was the daily drink for most Romans, sourced from aqueducts that crisscrossed the empire. They believed that mixing water with wine helped purify it, so it was common to see wine diluted before consumption. Apart from wine, they enjoyed barley water, fruit juices, and even a beverage called "posca," a mixture of vinegar and water. As you can see, dining during the Roman Empire was a vibrant tapestry of flavors, showcasing the influence of diverse cultures that comprised the empire. From the simplicity of bread and olives to the opulence of exotic meats and fine wines, the Romans knew how to savor life's pleasures at the dining table. So, the next time you sit down to enjoy a Mediterranean-inspired meal, raise a glass to the culinary legacy of ancient Rome. Cheers, or as the Romans would say, "Salute!"

  • 18 Ways to Get Back into Cooking This Year

Are you feeling a little rusty in the kitchen? You’re not alone. According to a study from the Harvard Business Review, only about 15% of people polled reported that they loved to cook, while 35% reported being “so-so” about it, and 50% of people reported they “hated” to cook. With statistics like these, it’s no wonder that people are spending more and more money on food prepared outside of the home. But let’s be honest, there are plenty of positives to prepping your own food, including cost effectiveness, the comfort of your own home (where else are pants optional?) and the food is made to order every time. Sounds great, but it’s not always that easy. Don’t worry, we’re here to help you get back into the kitchen, and have fun while you’re there! From starting small and keeping it simple, to trying out new cuisines and techniques, there are so many ways to reignite your love for cooking. Read on to find one (or several ways) that speak to you. Here are 18 tried-and-true ways to get back into cooking: 1. Take a cooking class If you're feeling stuck in a rut and want to expand your culinary horizons, consider signing up for a cooking class. You'll learn new techniques and maybe even discover a new passion. Whether you’re looking for an online or in-person class, there are tons of options available. Click here for a list of IMPASTIAMO’s class offerings. If you’re on a budget, check out your local library or community centers for any available classes. 2. Keep it simple Don't feel like you have to tackle a complex recipe or nine course meal right off the bat. There’s plenty of time for you to channel your inner Julia Child, but while you’re in the process of getting back into the kitchen, stick with basic dishes that you know how to make, or try out a new recipe that has only a few ingredients. Building your confidence and enjoying what you prepare is a strong motivator to keep going. 3. Get creative with your leftovers Don't let leftover food go to waste! Get creative and use them to make something new, like turning leftover roast chicken into a stir-fry or repurposing leftover mashed potatoes into potato pancakes. For more ideas, check out our blog post on How to Prevent Food Waste at Home. 4. Turn on some tunes Music has a way of making even the most mundane tasks more enjoyable. Put on your favorite playlist and let it inspire your culinary creations. Perhaps a French Bistro playlist will set the right mood for you. Or maybe some classic rock beats get you motivated to stir and chop. Whether Etta James or Post Malone is your favorite kitchen companion, we’re not here to question it! This is your time— so get your jam on. Think: every woman in a romantic comedy alone in her kitchen, but with more cooking and less lip syncing. 5. Embrace frozen and canned goods Frozen vegetables, canned tomatoes, and other shelf-stable ingredients can be a lifesaver when you're short on time or energy. They're also often more affordable than fresh produce, and you won’t be faced with racing the clock to use it before nature takes its course. Having a small stash of various versatile vegetables on hand is a great way to stay prepared for home cooking– because no one wants to start a recipe only to realize they forgot an ingredient or two. 6. Take advantage of seasonal produce Cooking with ingredients that are in season can make your meals taste fresher and more flavorful. Check out your local farmers market or join a CSA to get access to fresh, locally-grown produce. This is also a great way to broaden your horizons and experiment with cooking with ingredients that may not be in your usual wheelhouse. 7. Try out a new spice or herb Adding new spices and herbs to your recipes can give them a totally different flavor profile. Experiment with different combinations to see what you like best. For even more flair, challenge yourself to try cooking with fresh herbs or grind your own spices. 8. Experiment with international flavors Trying out new cuisines can be a fun and rewarding way to shake things up in the kitchen. You may be surprised that some of your favorite international dishes are not nearly as difficult to make as you might imagine. Don’t let a list of unfamiliar ingredients scare you away; there are tons of simplified recipes for beginner cooks, and you can work your way up in complexity as you gain experience. 9. Try out a new cooking technique Whether it's blanching or braising, frizzling or flambé, learning a new cooking technique can be a fun way to get excited about making your own meals. Cooking is all about trial and error, so don't be afraid to experiment and make mistakes. You'll learn from them and become a better cook in the process. 10. Get inspired There are many great recipe apps, food blogs, and cooking shows out there that can help you find new recipes and keep track of your favorites. There are an endless amount of recipes online, often with several versions of the same one. If you didn’t love a particular dish before, look for a recipe with a different ingredient list or technique, which might change your mind. 11. Buy a cookbook Kick it ‘old-school’ and find a cookbook that speaks to you, then work your way through it. Cookbooks are a great way to discover new recipes and get inspired in the kitchen, with the added bonus of doubling as decoration. Look for one with recipes that suit your tastes and skill level. 12. Use a cooking journal Keeping a cooking journal can be a great way to track your progress and document your favorite recipes. Write down what you made, any changes you made to the recipe, and your thoughts on the final dish. For more motivation, you could also tally up the total cost vs. what you would have spent on take-out or in a restaurant. 13. Find a cooking mentor If you want to improve your cooking skills, consider finding someone who can mentor you and provide guidance and support. This could be a friend, family member, or even a professional chef. Having someone to turn to for advice and encouragement can help you stay motivated and on track. For an even more special experience, ask an older relative to share their family recipes. Not only will you inherit a piece of your culture and lineage, but you can actively help to keep those traditions alive. 14. Make it a family affair Involve the kids or your roomies in the cooking process by giving them simple tasks to help with, like pouring, mixing, or setting the table. Not only will they learn valuable life skills, but they'll also be more likely to eat what they've helped to prepare. Check out this article for an in-depth look at the benefits of cooking in early childhood. 15. Make it romantic Turn date-night-in into a steamy activity and create something yummy with your partner. Cooking can be a great way to bond with your significant other. You just might have so much fun that you want to make it a weekly date night activity, trying out new recipes together. 16. Use a slow cooker Slow cookers are a great tool for busy home cooks. You can toss in a bunch of ingredients in the morning, and come home to a hot, ready-to-eat meal in the evening. Did you know you can cook an entire small chicken in the crock pot? Toss it in there with some seasoning, and come home to ready-to-shred-chicken that falls off the bone! Think outside the pot, and you’ll be amazed at the creative ways there are to simplify mealtime. 17. Plan ahead On the weekends or your days off, plan and prep meals for the week ahead. This will save you time and energy during the busy work week. Simply choose a few recipes, do all your chopping and prepping on the weekend, and you'll have easy, grab-and-go meals for the week. 18. Try a recipe box service Recipe box services deliver all the ingredients you need for a recipe right to your doorstep along with step-by-step instructions for each dish. It's a great way to try new things without having to think about grocery shopping. There are so many different meal options to choose from, including plant based, dairy free, Keto, and more. If you’re among the many people who want to use the new year as a kickstart for some new habits, take this as your sign to get back into the kitchen! If you have questions, we’re here to help. Let’s work together to make 2023 delicious. (hint hint: how about starting the year out with a delicious, homemade tiramisú?)
