- Culinary Enlightenment: The Importance of Cooking Education
When people say "knowledge is power," how much of that phrase can be applied in the kitchen? Hint: all of it. Power to the chefs out there, and power to you--your cooking education journey starts today! Another Form of Self-Care: It's not joke when people say that cooking is a life-long skill and something that can be essential to everyday routine. Beyond this necessity, however, there are personal gains as well. Before even delving into the benefits of a cooking education, let’s take the pressure off the word “education.” At the very least, taking the initiative to learn how to cook is an important act in self-care, and can remind you to always take a few moments to yourself and reap the rewards of your efforts. Formally learning the techniques to culinary skills? Just another plus. A Hands-On Experience: When most people think of the word “education,” their mind immediately gravitates toward dimly lit hallways and boring brick buildings. Maybe a pencil or two, coupled with exams and endless stress. A cooking education offers a rebuttal to the stereotypical classroom experience, offering a place where you are truly able to learn hands-on. What’s more, you can find a direct connection from what you are learning and apply it quickly into your own life. A cooking education will only add to your life, expanding both your palate and your plate. Choosing More Sustainably: When it comes to learning more about how to cook and the ingredients that go into your culinary masterpieces, it turns out that you will inevitably be more conscious of the environment. Here at IMPASTIAMO, we emphasize sustainability–and a cooking education can be the perfect place to start becoming more aware of your effect on the planet. From the actual elements of a recipe to the very process of cooking, a culinary education informs you about the importance of sustainability: not only extending a helping hand to the environment but also leaving you feeling even more gratified when the table is set. A win-win! Food As A Universal Language: One thing that all humans need is food. While that specifically may vary between different cultures, backgrounds, and communities–food is often the way that people explore new places, greet new people, and express their love. This means that food is, in a way, a universal language. Becoming well-versed in this language means you have the opportunity to connect with more people, introduce them to yourself, and express your creativity. A cooking education truly allows you to become fluent in food, opening you up to a whole new world and deepening your understanding of it. In other words, you are able to communicate in a way that is different from just speaking. Does this count as being multilingual? Building Confidence: One of the most valuable aspects of a cooking education is its ability to increase your autonomy and self-esteem. Learning about how to cook can help you discover traits and qualities about yourself, as well as expand your knowledge on your favorite dishes. Additionally, the independence and “flow state” that you can achieve while cooking can be immensely beneficial to your belief in your abilities. In other words, a cooking education can truly deepen your understanding of yourself, resulting in greater confidence in and out of the kitchen. The Right Time Is Now: Maybe it seems daunting to embark on this journey, with so many mistakes to make and so much to learn. However, it’s your lucky day: it is never too late to start! There is always something new to absorb, and a cooking education is for everybody. Whether you’re looking to expand your knowledge or are just starting out, curiosity and learning is for everyone–especially you. Are you ready or interested in hosting your first Cooking Class? Add the pastina pasta and cook according to the package instructions or until the pasta is tender. Drain the Pastina: Once the pastina is cooked, drain any excess water if necessary. If using chicken broth, you can leave a little liquid to enhance the flavor. Add Butter and Parmesan: Return the cooked pastina to the saucepan and add the unsalted butter. Stir until the butter is melted and coats the pasta evenly. Season and Serve: Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the pastina and mix well. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Garnish and Enjoy: Transfer the easy pastina to serving bowls. Garnish with fresh parsley or basil leaves if desired. Handmade Gnocchi For a taste of Italy in your own kitchen, try your hand at making homemade gnocchi! These easy, pillowy potato dumplings are surprisingly simple to prepare and deliver a burst of flavor in every bite. Ingredients: 2 large russet potatoes (about 1 pound each) 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 tablespoons unsalted butter Fresh sage leaves Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving Salt and black pepper to taste Instructions: Cook the Potatoes: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Pierce the potatoes with a fork a few times and bake them on a baking sheet for about 1 hour or until they are tender when pierced with a fork. Alternatively, you can boil the potatoes until tender, but baking helps to keep them drier. Prepare the Gnocchi Dough: Once the potatoes are cooked and cool enough to handle, peel off the skin and pass the flesh through a potato ricer or mash them until smooth. Let the mashed potatoes cool completely. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooled mashed potatoes, beaten egg, salt, and flour. Mix gently until a dough forms. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently until smooth. Be careful not to over-knead, as it can make the gnocchi dense. Shape the Gnocchi: Divide the dough into smaller portions. Roll each portion into a long, thin rope, about 1/2 inch in diameter. Cut the ropes into 3/4-inch pieces. To give the gnocchi their classic shape, you can press each piece gently with a fork or use a gnocchi board to make ridges. Cook the Gnocchi: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the gnocchi in batches and cook them until they float to the surface, which usually takes about 2-3 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked gnocchi to a plate. Make the Sage Butter Sauce: In a separate skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the fresh sage leaves and let them cook until they become crispy and the butter turns a golden brown color. Combine and Serve: Add the cooked gnocchi to the skillet with the sage butter sauce. Toss everything gently to coat the gnocchi evenly. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve: Transfer the handmade potato gnocchi to serving plates. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and garnish with extra sage leaves if desired. These handmade potato gnocchi with sage butter sauce are a labor of love that's well worth the effort. The result is tender, pillowy gnocchi with a delightful buttery and herby sauce. Serve them as a main dish or as a delightful side to accompany your favorite Italian meal. Buon appetito! (Here's another one of our favorite gnocchi recipes and here's our beloved gnocchi board!) 3. Once the oil is hot, add the Italian sausage links. Cook them until they are browned on all sides and cooked through, about 10-12 minutes. Transfer the sausages to a plate and set aside. Sauté Peppers and Onions: In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Add the sliced bell peppers and onions to the pan. Sauté them until they are softened and slightly caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Add Garlic and Seasonings: Stir in the minced garlic, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the garlic becomes fragrant. Combine Sausage and Vegetables: Slice the cooked Italian sausages into bite-sized pieces. Return them to the skillet with the peppers and onions. Toss everything together to combine, allowing the flavors to meld. Serve: Serve the Italian Sausage, Peppers, and Onions on crusty Italian rolls as a hearty sandwich or alongside cooked pasta for a satisfying main course. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley for a burst of color and added freshness. This easy and flavorful Italian Sausage, Peppers, and Onions dish brings the essence of Italy to your table. The tender sausages, sweet peppers, and savory onions create a harmonious combination that's perfect for a comforting and delicious meal. 4. Baked to perfection with marinara sauce and mozzarella, this dish is comfort food at its finest. Ingredients: 18-20 jumbo pasta shells 2 cups ricotta cheese 1 cup frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, divided 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Salt and black pepper to taste 2 cups marinara sauce Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional) Instructions: Cook the Pasta Shells: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the jumbo pasta shells according to the package instructions until they are al dente. Drain and set aside. Prepare the Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, thawed and drained spinach, half of the shredded mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, beaten egg, dried basil, dried oregano, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined. Stuff the Shells: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the bottom of a baking dish. Take each cooked pasta shell and spoon a generous amount of the spinach and ricotta filling into it. Arrange the stuffed shells in the baking dish. Add the Sauce: Pour the remaining marinara sauce over the stuffed shells, covering them evenly. Sprinkle the remaining shredded mozzarella cheese over the top. Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, with a golden brown color. Serve: Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Serve the Easy Spinach and Ricotta Stuffed Shells hot and enjoy the delicious combination of tender pasta shells filled with a creamy and flavorful spinach and ricotta mixture. These Easy Spinach and Ricotta Stuffed Shells are a delightful and satisfying Italian-inspired dish that requires minimal effort. The combination of creamy ricotta, nutritious spinach, and gooey cheese creates a mouthwatering filling that's perfect for a comforting weeknight dinner or a special occasion. This dish is sure to impress your family and friends with its flavorful simplicity. Cacio e Pepe Cacio e pepe is basically grown-up white cheddar mac and cheese, which is probably why it’s our go-to comfort food for quick weeknight dinners and dinner parties alike. Ingredients: 8 ounces spaghetti or bucatini pasta 1 cup grated Pecorino Romano cheese 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper Salt (optional) 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (optional) Instructions: Cook the Pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti or bucatini pasta and cook according to the package instructions until it is al dente. Reserve about 1 cup of pasta water before draining the pasta. Prepare the Cheese and Pepper Mixture: In a separate bowl, mix the grated Pecorino Romano cheese and coarsely ground black pepper together. Combine Pasta and Cheese Mixture: Once the pasta is cooked, drain it, reserving a cup of pasta water. Return the hot, drained pasta to the pot. Immediately add the cheese and pepper mixture to the pasta, tossing it vigorously to create a creamy sauce. If the sauce appears too thick, gradually add some of the reserved pasta water until you achieve the desired consistency. Adjust Seasoning: Taste the Cacio e Pepe and adjust the seasoning with salt if necessary. Pecorino Romano cheese is naturally salty, so you may not need additional salt. Optional: Add Butter (Mantecatura): For an extra luxurious touch, you can add unsalted butter to the pasta and toss it until the butter melts and incorporates into the sauce. Serve: Transfer the Easy Cacio e Pepe to serving plates. Sprinkle some additional black pepper and grated Pecorino Romano cheese on top for an extra burst of flavor. This Easy Cacio e Pepe recipe is a classic Italian dish that celebrates the simplicity of quality ingredients. With just a few basic pantry staples, you can create a creamy and comforting pasta dish that's rich in flavor and irresistibly delicious. - 10 Kitchen Supplies We Couldn’t Possibly Live Without
Building the perfect kitchen is a process that comes together one piece at a time. Whether you’re freshly out on your own and looking to start from the ground up, or you’re a (pardon the pun) *seasoned* professional, it’s always fun to get some extra inspiration. Keep scrolling to see the 10 kitchen supplies we couldn't possibly live without. 1. Stand Mixer Starting it off strong with the one item that you’re almost guaranteed to see on every wedding registry for the last decades. There’s a reason the stand mixer is so popular, in addition to coming in any color you could desire, it’s the versatility that keeps it in use time and time again. Not only can you whip, beat, stir, mix, cream, and knead, but additional attachments allow you to spiralize vegetables, grind meat and make homemade pasta. Sure, you could stand there with a hand mixer for the full 10 minutes that your almond cake recipe calls for, but what if you didn’t have to? It also takes the work out of recipes that call for a little more elbow grease, such as heavy dough or meat shredding. You read that right: people are using their stand mixer to shred cooked meat in a fraction of the time that it takes to do it by hand. In terms of price, you can drop some serious dough (yep, we did it again) or just as easily find a mixer within your budget. Just be aware that some attachments will be easier to find for certain models. 2. High Quality Knife Having the right tools for the job can make or break your culinary endeavor. Sure, you can have a knife for every occasion, but if you’re a chef-on-a-budget or just starting out, a high quality, multipurpose knife will be your best friend. This 8” Bowie Chef knife is one of our favorites, and a classic for a reason. Due to the shape and quality of the knife, you’ll be hard pressed to find a job in the kitchen that this gal can’t handle. For style points, you might be interested in a Chinese Cleaver, or similar style of knife. Check out this article for a crash course in what you need to know, and why they consider the Chinese Cleaver the “Best All Purpose Kitchen Knife.” 3. Food Thermometer A reliable food thermometer is one of those tools that there’s really no replacement for. The best way to ensure your food is cooked to safe temperatures, to check the temperature of a steak to prevent cutting right into it, and let’s not forget baking and candy-making. Depending on your needs, you really don’t have to break the bank, however many fancier models are available if you’re ready to take things to the next level. 4. Kitchen Shears Kitchen shears don’t get much fanfare, but they remain a staple in our kitchens because of their impressive versatility. Do you hate trying to wrangle fresh herbs to cut with a knife? Try snipping small slivers with the shears. One of our favorite uses is for cutting small pieces of bacon for sautéing; simply hold over the pan and slice right in! They’re also a solution to those too- large pieces of food that sneak into the pan too soon. Leave them where they are and grab your trusty shears, simply snip the food right in the pan and move along. 5. Rice Cooker Raise your hand if you’ve ever been personally victimized by rice cooked on the stove. Yeah, us too. That’s why we have a rice cooker solidly holding its well-deserved place in our hearts and on this list. Whether you opt for a basic one-function option, or want to go a bit further, rice cookers have one job, and they do it really well. Fluffy, perfectly cooked rice without the mushy, soggy mess that stirring in a pot can leave you with. Yes, please! 6. Gnocchi Board Making gnocchi is like making puff pastry: nobody does it because it’s easy, they do it because it’s worth it. If you’re going to put the time and love into making arguably one of the best carb forms to come out of Italy, we like to stick with tradition. Like the cherry on top of a sundae, those small ridges and shell-like curve add that touch of elegance that only comes from a gnocchi board. Yes, you can use a fork in a pinch, but we can’t promise a few Italian Nonnas won’t shed a tear. Get your own wooden gnocchi board here! 7. Cheesecloth This is one of those items that you probably won’t think about on a regular basis, but when you need it, you NEED it. Useful for more than just straining cheese (but that alone is a worthy cause), this can strain juices, clarified butter, homemade oat or almond milk, grated vegetables for baking, you name it. 8. Roman Style Pizza Al Taglio Pan You know the saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” We’re trusting the inventors of the pizza on this one, but allow us to explain why… Blue iron metal comes from the same family of metals as cast iron, but with several key differences, the most noticeable one is that it is much lighter than cast iron. Chef Julia Sullivan summed it up best when she said: “Carbon steel is the best of both worlds. You get the lightweight properties of stainless steel…and the heat conductivity and retention you would with cast iron. It’s a thinner metal, which means it can heat up really quickly and conduct heat even better than cast iron.” To get that classic, hearty, crispy crust that pizza al taglio is known for, you need to use the right pan. Get your own original Roman Style Pizza tray, made in blue iron metal, here. 9. Electric Frother Coffee enthusiasts won’t be surprised to see this one, but even if you don’t have a love for coffee, you might still be missing out on what one of these little guys could add to your kitchen. If you need convincing, check out this article on the many uses (other than for milk) that the author found for her electric frother [spoiler: you can make a mean cup of hot chocolate, the fluffiest eggs, and amazing sauces/ dressings.] 10. Butter Bell Is there anything better than freshly baked bread with butter? If you agree, then you need a butter bell: the French invention you might have never heard of. Instead of keeping your butter out on the counter or in the refrigerator, the butter bell solves the problem of having to choose between spreadability and freshness. The butter bell’s design utilizes a water seal to preserve the butter from otherwise being exposed to the elements, while retaining the benefit of room-temperature, soft deliciousness. Another point to the butter bell? How beautiful it looks on your countertop. You can find just about any style of butter bell to compliment your particular kitchen. We love this one from Crate&Barrel or if you’re curious, check out this one whose white ceramic counterpart sold out in 12 hours when it was released in 2015. Here’s a fun read with the story. To sum it up... Do you need the latest and greatest of every kitchen item to hit the market? Absolutely not. With some basic staples and a few specialty items (not the least of which include the electric frother, gnocchi board, and cheesecloth) for less than $20, you can outfit your kitchen to be prepared for just about any culinary adventure. - 10 Cooking Tips We Learned in Culinary School
Cooking school may not be right for everyone, but there are some culinary school tips and techniques that anyone can use while cooking at home, without investing in a white chef's coat! Join us as we unveil the top 10 delectable tips we've acquired during our time in culinary school, each a culinary gem that's ready to infuse your cooking endeavors with a touch of professional finesse. Whether you're a seasoned home cook or a curious novice, these insights are bound to add a pinch of gourmet magic to your culinary creations. Here are 10 tasty tips we learned in culinary school: 1. Keep Your Knives Sharp The first thing we did in culinary school was learn how to chop carrots and onions. The second thing? Learn how to properly sharpen a knife. It’s important to realize that a sharp knife makes chopping so much faster and easier. (Plus, you don’t need to use as much force when your knife is sharp, which means it’s safer, too.) Plenty of kitchen specialty stores will sharpen your knives for a reasonable price–so it’s definitely worth bringing them in when they’re getting dull. 2. Opt for the *Really Good* Knife Set Speaking of knives… Knives are probably the most useful thing in your kitchen, so it's important to get a high-quality set that will last you a long time. And, whatever you do, don’t put your cutting knives in the dishwasher! 3. Keep Your Cutting Board in Place with a Wet Towel Chopping on a cutting board that keeps sliding all over the counter can be so annoying. Use a damp paper towel or dish towel to keep it in place. You can keep it stable by getting a paper towel, soaking it in water, wringing it out, then laying it out flat before putting the board down. Just like that. The damp towel acts a grip, preventing your cutting board from moving all around while you’re trying to use it. 4. Practice the Art of Mise en Place Mise en place (MEEZ ahn plahs) is the French term for “having all your ingredients measured, cut, peeled, sliced, grated, etc. before you start cooking.” Pans and mixing bowls are placed out. Tools and equipment are hooked up and ready. Ingredients are measured and prepped. It is this method that allows chefs to get meals on the table so quickly. While you don't need to be so precise at home, it's much easier to follow a recipe when you have your ingredients all prepared beforehand. Simply put: Prep all your ingredients before you start cooking. That way, you’re not scrambling around chopping onions while the garlic burns or the water boils over. 5. Toast Your Spices and Nuts Even though it may seem unnecessary, toasting actually perks up the essential oils and intensifies the flavor of a recipe. For more info, check out the L.A. Time’s Test Kitchen video tip: Toasting spices and nuts for flavor. 6. Perk Up Your Food with a Little Acidity Don't be scared of acid! If your dish is missing a little something, but you can’t put your finger on what it is, chances are it could use a little bit of acidity–such as wine, lemon juice or orange juice. 7. When in Doubt, Add Salt Have you ever thought about why you like salt so much? Salt brings out flavor, which means well-salted food tastes more like itself than under-salted food. Season each new ingredient with a tiny bit of salt each time you add them to a recipe to really maximize the flavors. 8. Clean as You Cook You’ve probably heard this one before, but another great skill you’ll learn in culinary school is cleaning your space as you cook. Wipe down your cutting board after you finish preparing each ingredient. Put pots, pans, and utensils in the sink or dishwasher as soon as you’re done using them. And wash your hands often. There probably isn’t a cooking instructor looking over your shoulder as you clean, be as organized and tidy as if there were! 9. Buy a Food Scraper Cooks often use their knives to scrape whatever they've chopped into a bowl after they've finished chopping. Avoid doing this! In addition to being dangerous, it will also quickly dull your knife blade. Make it easy on yourself by investing in a bench scraper–you can use it to remove food scraps and transfer stuff from the cutting board to pots and pans. 10. Never Throw Away Kitchen Scraps! When it comes to making stock, leftover bones and scraps are literal kitchen gold. You can make chicken stock with nothing but bones if you want. You can also make beef stock with beef bones, fish stock with fish bones and scraps, and so on. Not only is it cheaper than buying stock, but it’s also often tastier, and lets you cut down on waste. These days, we collect bones and vegetable scraps in a sealed gallon bag in the freezer, then make a few quarts of stock every time the bag fills up. Additionally, reusing (or composting) food waste is better for the planet–and we’re all about practicing sustainability in the kitchen! Want to up your cooking game? You're in the right place. - Perfecting the Art of Cooking Pasta Al Dente: A Step-by-Step Guide
Cooking pasta al dente is an essential skill every pasta lover should master. Achieving that perfect balance of tenderness and firmness can elevate your pasta dishes to totally new heights. In this blog post, we will delve into the art of cooking pasta al dente and provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to make your pasta perfectly al dente every time! *chef's kiss* Understanding the Art of Al Dente To cook pasta al dente means to cook it until it is still slightly firm to bite. This technique not only enhances the texture of the pasta but also helps it better absorb sauces, resulting in a more flavorful dish. Al dente pasta offers a delightful contrast between the soft exterior and the slightly chewy interior, creating a satisfying dining experience. Choosing the Right Pasta and Cooking Time Selecting the appropriate type of pasta is crucial for achieving al dente perfection. Different pasta shapes and sizes require different cooking times. Generally, durum wheat semolina pasta is recommended as it holds its shape better when cooked al dente. Read the package instructions to determine the cooking time, but be prepared to test the pasta a minute or two earlier for the desired texture. Salted Boiling Water: The Foundation Start by bringing a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Add salt to the water before cooking the pasta. Salting the water not only enhances the pasta's flavor but also seasons it evenly. Use approximately 1 tablespoon of salt per 4 liters of water. This will ensure that the pasta absorbs the salt while cooking, contributing to its overall taste. Timing Is Key: Cooking Pasta al Dente Once the water is boiling, carefully add the pasta and stir immediately to prevent sticking. Follow the recommended cooking time on the package as a starting point. However, begin checking the pasta for doneness a minute or two earlier. To achieve al dente perfection, the pasta should still have a slight resistance when bitten into. It should not be mushy or overly soft. Testing and Finishing Touches To test if the pasta is cooked al dente, remove a strand or a piece and bite into it. It should be firm to the tooth but not hard. If the pasta is not quite ready, continue cooking and check again at 30-second intervals. Once it reaches the desired consistency, promptly drain the pasta and avoid rinsing it, as the starches clinging to the pasta will help bind it with the sauce. Cooking pasta al dente may require a little practice, but once you master this skill, you'll appreciate the incredible difference it makes in your pasta dishes. By following these steps and understanding the concept of al dente, you'll be able to serve perfectly cooked pasta every time. Enjoy the delightful texture and enhanced flavors that al dente pasta brings to your culinary creations. Remember, practice makes perfect, so don't be afraid to experiment and refine your technique to suit your personal preferences. From the familiar favorites like spaghetti and penne to the more unique shapes like Trofie and Anelli, each type of pasta has its own story to tell. Take Trofie, for instance, originating from the Liguria region of Italy, its hand-rolled twists are perfect for capturing sauces and pesto, creating a delightful burst of flavors with every bite. On the other hand, Anelli are small, hollow circles that soak up flavors and are ideal for cold and warm pasta salads, soups, and casseroles. Keep reading to explore some of the other fascinating pasta shapes like Tagliatelle, Tortellini, and more. Get ready to embark on a journey of culinary delights as we delve deeper into the magic of different types of pasta. Spaghetti Let's start with a classic: spaghetti. These long, thin strands are a staple in Italian cuisine and pair very very well with a wide range of sauces, from simple marinara to creamy Alfredo. Its versatility and ability to hold onto sauces make it a timeless favorite on dinner tables worldwide. Tortellini Tortellini is a ring-shaped pasta that is usually stuffed with a delectable filling, such as cheese, meat, or vegetables. Its unique shape, reminiscent of a little belly button, has a fascinating origin story dating back to Italian folklore. Tortellini is a beloved pasta variety, often served in broths or with creamy sauces that enhance the flavors of the filling. Its delicate texture and savory taste make it a delightful addition to any pasta lover's repertoire. Penne Penne, with its short, tube-like shape and diagonal cut ends, is another pasta you'll frequently encounter. The hollow center of penne helps it trap sauces, making it ideal for dishes with hearty or chunky sauces like Bolognese or arrabbiata. Fusilli Fusilli's corkscrew shape is both whimsical and practical. The twisted design holds onto sauces beautifully, and the nooks and crannies are perfect for capturing bits of vegetables or meat. It's a go-to choice for pasta salads and baked pasta dishes. Farfalle Also known as bow tie pasta, farfalle is famous for its butterfly-like shape. The elegant curves and wide surface area make it ideal for creamy and light sauces. When dressed with a delicate pesto or a simple tomato sauce, farfalle becomes a charming addition to any plate. Rigatoni Rigatoni stands out with its large, ridged tubes. The ridges not only help the sauce cling to the pasta but also give it a unique texture. Rigatoni works beautifully with chunky sauces, making it a great choice for baked dishes or hearty ragù. Orzo Orzo may look like rice, but it's actually a small pasta shape resembling grains of barley. This diminutive pasta is often used in soups, salads, and casseroles, adding delightful texture and substance to any dish. Orecchiette Orecchiette, translating to "little ears" in Italian, is a small, round pasta with a slight indentation in the center. The concave shape captures sauce well, making it ideal for dishes like broccoli rabe orecchiette or orecchiette with cherry tomatoes and garlic. Campanelle Campanelle, meaning "little bells," takes the form of small, cone-shaped pasta with ruffled edges. This charming shape pairs wonderfully with creamy sauces or pesto, and its design allows it to hold up well in baked pasta dishes. Radiatori Radiatori pasta looks like miniature radiators, complete with ridges and grooves. The inventive shape allows it to hold onto thick, chunky sauces, making it a delightful choice for heartier dishes. Pappardelle Pappardelle stands out with its broad, ribbon-like strands. This pasta shape is perfect for luxurious, meaty sauces, like a slow-cooked ragù or a hearty wild mushroom sauce. Its width and texture create an indulgent eating experience. Cavatappi Cavatappi, with its corkscrew-like shape, is a fun and playful pasta that complements both creamy and chunky sauces. The twists and turns of cavatappi hold onto any sauce, making each bite a delightful explosion of flavors. Gnocchi Gnocchi (though technically a type of dumpling) is often classified as a pasta due to its similar preparation and serving style. These small, deliciously soft dumplings are made with potato, flour, and sometimes ricotta. Their pillowy texture is perfect for absorbing rich sauces like Gorgonzola cream or sage butter. Ravioli Ravioli are square or circular pockets of pasta filled with various ingredients like cheese, meat, vegetables, or seafood. They are often served with a light sauce that complements the filling. Ravioli can be a true culinary masterpiece, offering an explosion of flavors in each bite. Fettuccine Fettuccine, similar to spaghetti but wider, is a staple of Italian cuisine, particularly in dishes like Fettuccine Alfredo. Its flat shape allows it to hold creamy sauces and brings a touch of elegance to any pasta meal. Linguine Linguine is like a slightly wider, flattened version of spaghetti. Its name means "little tongues" in Italian, and it's a popular choice for dishes with light, oil-based sauces or seafood. Cavatelli Cavatelli is a small, shell-shaped pasta originating from Southern Italy. The unique shape allows it to hold sauces and flavors well, making it a popular choice in pasta salads and dishes with simple, light sauces. Conchiglie Conchiglie, or "shells," is a pasta shape that resembles small seashells. The concave shape allows it to hold onto sauces and fillings, making it an excellent choice for dishes like stuffed pasta shells or pasta salads. Bucatini Bucatini is a thick, spaghetti-like pasta with a hole running through the center. This unique design creates a pleasing texture and allows the pasta to capture and hold onto rich, tomato-based sauces or cheesy preparations. Tagliatelle Tagliatelle is a classic Italian pasta, long and flat in shape, similar to fettuccine but typically narrower. This versatile pasta is well-known for its ability to pair beautifully with a wide range of sauces, making it a favorite among pasta enthusiasts. Whether coated in a creamy Alfredo sauce, a hearty Bolognese, or a light olive oil and herb dressing, Tagliatelle's texture and width allow it to absorb and showcase flavors with every twirl of the fork. Trofie Trofie is a hand-rolled pasta originating from the Liguria region of Italy. Its unique twisted shape captures sauces and pesto beautifully, creating a delightful burst of flavors with every bite. Trofie's artisanal quality adds a touch of authenticity to any pasta dish, making it a standout choice for both traditional and contemporary recipes. This versatile pasta pairs wonderfully with a variety of sauces, from simple tomato-based ones to creamy, cheesy creations. Whether you're preparing a classic Ligurian pesto dish or a hearty meat sauce, Trofie's texture and ability to hold sauces make it a true joy to cook and savor. Anelli Anelli, meaning "rings" in Italian, is a charming and versatile pasta shape resembling small, hollow circles. Its unique design allows it to soak up flavors and sauces, making it perfect for cold and warm pasta salads, soups, and casseroles. Pastina Pastina, translating to "little pasta" in Italian, is a tiny pasta often used in soups and broths. - Recycling Doesn’t Go on Vacation
Summer is here, and while we’re planning our next holidays, we should not forget to plan the "Calendar of Good Habits". Did you know that a few easy tips will help you and the environment? Probably yes, but sticking a reminder on the fridge, between two souvenir magnets from your past trip, is never a bad idea. Good eating habits mainly come from our kitchen and our way of shopping. IMPASTIAMO wants to share some tips with you: Prepare your Shopping List in Advance Always make the shopping list; this way you will know exactly what you need. If you have the possibility, make a few purchases every day, so the food will not accumulate in the refrigerator and pantry. Always carry a reusable bag with you and choose local producers. Choose Seasonal Choose seasonal fruits and vegetables. Fresh foods available only at certain times of the year last longer and don't have to travel long distances to get to supermarkets. It is also important to choose the right degree of ripeness, dividing the vegetables that you want to eat first from those that will be eaten later. Make a Delicious Jam 101 Don't ignore the bruised fruit, not even the one you have around the house that is turning black. Add sugar instead and put it on the fire to cook, then put it back in the jars. In this way, you will have obtained homemade jam. Vegetable Stock will be the Answer If, on the other hand, there are vegetables left over (such as carrots, courgettes, tomatoes, celery, and onion), the simplest thing to do is to put everything in a pot and boil it with a little water. In this way, you will get vegetable broth, which can be frozen and used for many other recipes. The Doggy Bag Lastly, if you go to a restaurant, don't be ashamed to ask for the 'doggy bag.' It is food that you have already paid for and that otherwise would be thrown away. Take it home, eat it the next day, or put it in a Tupperware and take it with you to work.
